Installing Matching Windows in a Garage Conversion

29th November 2024 by fixedsupport

Enhancing Aesthetics and Comfort

When converting a garage into a functional living space, one of the most important aspects to consider is the installation of windows. Adding matching windows not only improves the aesthetic appeal of the converted space but also enhances natural light, ventilation, and overall comfort. Here’s why and how we install matching windows in your garage conversion.

1. Aesthetic Cohesion

Installing matching windows is key to ensuring your garage conversion blends seamlessly with the rest of your home. Mismatched windows can make the conversion look like an afterthought, diminishing your property’s curb appeal. By choosing windows that match the style, size, and trim of your existing windows, we create a cohesive exterior that enhances the overall design of your home. This attention to detail is particularly important if you’re aiming to boost your property’s resale value.

2. Improved Natural Light

Garages typically lack sufficient natural light, making the space feel dark and unwelcoming. Installing windows that match those in the rest of your home allows you to bring in more sunlight, brightening the converted space and making it more inviting.

3. Enhanced Ventilation

Proper ventilation is crucial for any living space, especially in a garage conversion where the original design may not have included windows or adequate airflow. Matching windows that can open and close easily improve ventilation, helping to regulate temperature and maintain indoor air quality. This is particularly important if you’re converting the garage into a bedroom, kitchen, or bathroom.

4. Energy Efficiency

When installing new windows, we consider energy-efficient options that match the performance of your home’s existing windows. This reduces energy costs and makes the space more comfortable all year round.

Installing matching windows in your garage conversion is an essential step in creating a harmonious, comfortable, and aesthetically pleasing living space. By carefully selecting windows that blend with your home’s existing design, we ensure that your conversion looks intentional and adds value to your property.

How long will my garage conversion take?

27th October 2024 by fixedsupport

On average, a straightforward single garage conversion to habitable living space (eg bedroom, office, playroom, study) will take two weeks from start to finish. This includes bricking up the front and replacing the garage door with a matching window, insulating, laying the floor, all electrics and plumbing, boarding out, plastering and sockets, skirting, window cills etc. Essentially you start on day one with an empty garage and it’s ready for you to paint, carpet and move in two weeks later.

If the conversion involves a bathroom, an internal wall removal or a kitchen installation then this adds a little time. Usually a week or so but we rarely take longer than four weeks no matter how complex. We have created a number of granny annexes with a washroom, shower and toilet, a small kitchen plus bedroom, all in four weeks.

Although each garage conversion is completely bespoke, we give you a clear timeframe and a schedule of works at the quotation stage. We rarely differ from this schedule as we understand precisely what needs to be done and how long it takes, having completed hundreds of garage conversions. On the rare occasions we hit a problem and need to adapt, we communicate straight away and find a solution.

We only run one job at a time so all our people and resources are on that job, which is how we manage to complete our projects so quickly and efficiently. Plus, we only convert garages, nothing else, so we know what we’re doing!

If you’d like to transform your home in a few weeks then give us a call for a free no obligation quotation on 07729 437217 or info@midlandgarageconversions.co.uk.

Converting your garage in time for Christmas

27th September 2024 by fixedsupport

Although it seems far too early to be using the C word, research shows most people start organising the day in early October. The chances are you’ve already given some thought to who you’ll be spending the day with and how to fit everyone in.

If you are planning to host friends or family and are looking for extra space this festive season you could consider getting your garage converted in time for Christmas. You can create an extra bedroom, another reception room for the children (or adults!) to play in, or a dining room to gather the whole family.

On average it takes us just two weeks to convert from an unused garage to a completely finished space ready for you to paint the walls and move in. Not only can it make the festive season a lot more stress free, but it significantly increases the value of your home so it’s a cost effective long term solution.

We are booking our last few slots before Christmas so give us a call on 07729 437217 or message us on info@midlandgarageconversions.co.uk if you’d like a free quotation.

Converting a Garage into a Bedroom

30th August 2024 by fixedsupport

A smart and stylish solution

As housing costs rise and families grow, finding additional space within your existing home becomes increasingly appealing. One of the best ways to create extra living space without the expense and hassle of building an extension is by converting your garage into a bedroom. This transformation not only adds valuable square footage but also enhances the functionality of your home.

1. Maximising Space Efficiently

A garage conversion is a practical solution for homeowners needing an extra bedroom. The average single-car garage offers around 200 square feet of space – perfect for a cozy bedroom. This can be an ideal option for accommodating a growing family, creating a guest room, or even providing a more private space for a teenager or elderly relative.

2. Cost-Effective Alternative

Compared to adding an extension, converting a garage is often more affordable. The basic structure is already in place, which means you save on foundation and construction costs. Additionally, you can avoid the complexities and delays associated with major home renovations. With proper planning and budgeting, you can achieve a stylish and comfortable bedroom conversion without breaking the bank.

3. Increasing Property Value

A well-designed garage-to-bedroom conversion can significantly boost your home’s value. Potential buyers often see additional bedrooms as a major asset, especially in markets where space is at a premium. By converting your garage, you’re not only enhancing your living situation but also making a smart investment in your property’s future resale value.

4. Personalization and Comfort

Converting your garage into a bedroom allows for complete customisation. You can design the space to reflect your style and meet specific needs, whether that means adding extra windows for natural light, incorporating built-in storage, or choosing cozy flooring. The result is a personalized, comfortable space that blends seamlessly with the rest of your home.

Converting a garage into a bedroom is a cost-effective, value-adding solution that can transform your home into a more functional and comfortable living space.

Working from Home

8th March 2024 by Claire Pigeon

Working from home has become increasingly popular since the pandemic. While it began as a temporary solution for many, it has become the norm for a large percentage of the population. In 2023 research from The Home Office Life showed 85% of office workers were taking a hybrid approach to work, with at least some days a week working from home.

In the early days of the pandemic when many people were forced to work from home for the first time, people had to adapt quickly. Dining room tables were taken over with laptops and spare bedrooms were hastily rearranged to accommodate desks and phones. However, now this is becoming a more permanent part of our working lives people are looking for longer term solutions.

Some people are lucky enough to have an office or spare room in the first place this can work perfectly. However, if not, converting your garage can be an excellent solution. There will be an initial outlay, but the conversion will increase the value or your home significantly. This usually not only covers the original outlay but adds further value.

At Midland Garage Conversions we can convert a single garage to a home office in two weeks. We will deal with all the building control, certification and inspections on your behalf so you can sit back and let us take care of everything. Contact us for a free no obligation quote.

Is a Garage Conversion Cost Effective?

9th February 2024 by Claire Pigeon

Throughout our lives we will outgrow our home on more than one occasion. For most people the logical next step is to start the process of looking for another home. The costs involved in moving house can be eye-watering. Solicitors fees, estate agent fees, stamp duty, remortgage fees, removal companies, post redirection and other costs can all add up to five figures. This is dead money; there is nothing material to show from this, it’s just the cost of choosing to move. This is a source of real frustration for many homebuyers.

On top of the financial burden a house move creates, there are months of stress and upheaval. A house can easily take more than six months to sell, especially when there is a chain involved. An independent survey by Index Digital showed moving house is the most stressful life event according to the British public, ranking higher than a divorce or having a child.

Having a garage conversion to increase the usable space in your home can be a fantastic alternative to all this stress and financial outlay. The average cost of moving home in the UK is £10,255 in 2024 according to Homeowners Alliance. Comparably, a single garage conversion (which can be used as a bedroom/bathroom, an open plan kitchen, an office, a studio etc) will cost around £15,000 and add value of around £20,000 to your home. So for the initial outlay, the average person can make £5,000 profit from converting a garage compared to losing £10,255 on moving home. That’s is a difference of over £15,000.

Equally, the average single garage conversion takes Midland Garage Conversions just two weeks. We take care of all certification including building control and project manage everything for you. There’s no paperwork (other than our agreement) to contend with, no solicitors, estate agents or tax calculations. There is very little disruption to your main living area because we’re tucked away working in the garage. Apart from the odd cup of tea, you’ll barely know we’re there! By comparison, a house move will take anywhere between six months to a year of stress, uncertainty and disruption.

Finally the number one reason people choose to move home in the UK is they want more space. Often the emotional wrench of leaving friends, family, schools and neighbours behind is tough. Again, a garage conversion lets you expand into your own home, surrounded by the people and things you love.

If you find yourself needing more space then consider a garage conversion as an alternative to moving home. Low stress, quick and efficient and the added bonus of adding value to your home.

Curb Appeal

26th January 2024 by Claire Pigeon

Curb appeal can make a huge difference to the value of your home. Not only can a garage conversion offer you more space inside but it can vastly improve the aesthetic from the outside too. Large metal garage doors are not always the prettiest addition to the front elevation and most people prefer the neat, co-ordinated look that comes with a garage conversion.

Research conducted by Evolution Money shows that 93% of people pass judgement on a property based purely on how it looks from the outside. Whilst a fresh coat of paint and a well maintained garden are crucial to creating a good first impression, a well executed garage conversion has the power to improve a home’s curb appeal and value. It makes the living space look bigger, it neatens the aesthetic and creates continuity, with matching windows and brickwork.

At Midland Garage Conversions we seamlessly blend the existing house and your conversion so you would never know it was once a garage. We have the windows custom made, the brickwork is matched perfectly and any decoration such as cills are handmade to fit. This improves and enhances the front view considerably. Take a look at our portfolio for some examples.

Can I Create a Granny Annexe with my Garage Space?

5th May 2023 by Claire Pigeon

With adequate room the short answer is yes. This is a common conversion as ageing parents or family members may need to move in to be supported yet independent.  Having a self contained living area within your home for them eases concerns around isolation, falls, mobility and general well-being.

Deterioration in the health of a family member can be extremely stressful and private care and sheltered living arrangements are sparse in some areas. Some of the challenges can be mitigated by converting your unused space in your garage to a self contained but connected unit.

We can usually fit in a bedroom, a shower room and toilet, a small living area and even a small kitchen area if the size permits.  This means no stairs to use the bathroom facilities, everything you need within an easy distance and the support and care of your family within the same building. For the family too, the peace of mind of being able to pop your head round the door to make sure your vulnerable relative is safe and well is invaluable.

We can also adapt the garage for living space downstairs for a current member of the household who has had a change in circumstances such a progressive illness or sudden loss of mobility.  In this instance we usually create a spacious bedroom and bathroom then connect the garage with the rest of the house so it becomes a straightforward downstairs bedroom with an ensuite.

With certain disabilities or conditions there are also grants or tax advantages available to help you adapt your home.

If you are considering your options in the face of disability or mobility issues then give us a call for a free, no obligation chat.
